Five observations about Week 8 in the NFL:

Jim Caldwell survives, Ken Whisenhunt doesn't

It was no surprise that a one win team fired its coach Tuesday. The surprise was which team did it. Detroit coach Jim Caldwell was widely considered to be a patriots jerseys cheap candidate for a pink slip during the bye week after the team fell to 1 7 with a 45 10 loss to Kansas City in London. Oakland's Dennis Allen last year and Miami's Joe Philbin this year were fired during the bye week after lopsided losses in London. But Caldwell survived and blamed the media for being negative. Instead, the Titans made the surprising move of firing Ken Whisenhunt with the team at 1 6 after a 20 6 loss to Houston. And they promoted former Jaguars coach shop steelers Mike Mularkey to the position of interim head coach even though Dick LeBeau is on the staff and Mularkey was 2 14 in his one year with the Jaguars. There had been no speculation that Whisenhunt was in trouble because he has a rookie quarterback in Marcus Mariota, seahawks stuff for sale who is injured and has played in just five games. In both cases, the decisions were made by women now running the teams. Amy Adams Strunk, a daughter of team founder Bud Adams, decided to fire Whisenhunt and Martha Firestone Ford, the widow of former William Clay Ford, decided to keep Caldwell. Both of them will have to make more decisions at the end of the year.

The Giants need a D

The Giants have been noted for their defense back to the days when Sam Huff played middle linebacker and down through Bill Parcells two title teams with Lawrence Taylor to the front four that twice beat Tom Brady in Super Bowls under Tom Coughlin. But the Giants no longer have a good defense. Eli Manning threw six touchdown passes as the Giants scored 49 points but lost, 52 49, to New Orleans as Drew Brees threw seven touchdown passes to tie a league record. The Giants still lead the NFC East at 4 4, a half game ahead of 3 4 Philadelphia and Washington, but the Giants defense has to start playing better if the Giants are to win the division and save Coughlin's job.

The Colts are still 3 0 in the AFC South

The Colts fell to 3 5 with the Monday night loss at Carolina and coach Chuck Pagano fired offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, who coached Andrew Luck at Stanford. Things aren't likely to get any better Sunday when Denver comes to Indianapolis for a Peyton Manning homecoming. But all it not lost for the Colts. Their three victories were in the AFC South. If they beat the Jaguars, Texans and Titans the second time around, they would be at least 6 10 even if they lost their other games and win the tie breakers unless the Jaguars or Texans go 7 9. No team has won a division title and hosted a playoff game with a 6 10 record, but the Colts still have a shot at it.

For a Harvard guy, Ryan Fitzpatrick made a dumb move

Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered ligament damage in his left thumb because he didn't slide in Oakland and was injured while being tackled. His status is uncertain and coach Todd Bowles said he needs to slide in a situation like that. Fitzpatrick played at Harvard, but he wasn't a smart football player with that move. Meanwhile, young backup Geno Smith also took unnecessary hits because he didn't slide or run out of bounds. The Jets Jaguars game is off the boards in Las Vegas because of the uncertainty at the Jets' quarterback situation. Bowles needs to conduct a primer on quarterbacks sliding to avoid hits.

Todd Gurley off to blazing start

Todd Gurley may carry Rams to the playoffs in what could be their final year in St. Louis. Gurley is the first rookie in NFL history to rush for 125 plus yards in four consecutive games. He has 566 yards in those four games, most in the Super Bowl era for a running back making his four starts. He also leads the NFL with four rushes for 45 or more yards including a 71 yard touchdown burst against the 49ers. The Rams go to Minnesota Sunday where Gurley will duel Adrian Peterson.
